For the Art Enthusiast

BURCHFIELD PENNEY ART CENTER video

Sophisticated. Cutting edge. Exceptional. Superlatives are required to discuss the fine art venues of Buffalo Niagara. From world-class museums to ground-breaking artist-run galleries, the art scene here is among the most exciting in the United States. Buffalo has long been recognized as one of the top art destinations in America by such publications as the New York Times, the Washington Post, and American Style. Art in Buffalo is not cute, quaint, or timid. It is big, bold, and beautiful. Sometimes, it's in your face.

Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center The story of Buffalo art is the story of Seymour Knox, Jr., who quietly amassed a top-notch collection of international modern contemporary art during the 1950s for the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. It is the story of Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, (Laurel Farrin, Tu Tu, 2002, at right) an artists' space that - thirty years after its founding by artists Cindy Sherman and Robert Longo, and others - has retained and enhanced its international reputation for showcasing challenging art, music, and performance, and has now moved into a beautifully restored downtown church it shares with Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records. It is the story of American watercolorist Charles Burchfield and the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, which in 2006 broke ground for a new multi-million dollar facility in the Elmwood District. It is the story of Buffalo Arts Studio, where over thirty-five local artists work and regularly open their studios to the public.

It is a story that is still being written, as, each year, new galleries spring up and existing galleries enhance their already-sterling reputations. Click on the links below to learn more about Buffalo Niagara's art scene.
